This iris photographes a very deep blue. As I recall, the flowers look a bit more purple and somewhat little less intense, but its still a very nice iris.

Glad Rags
Glad Rags, Hager 1985
I think this is one of the nicest tall bearded iris that I grow. It has good rich colors. The standards in this picture are little washed out by the sun, but still show a strong yellow. The form of the blossoms is "modern" but is not overdone.

Hody Do
Hody Do, Byers 1986
This is a "space age" or "novelty" iris. The tips of the beards lift off the petals forming "horns".

Hollywood Blond
Hollywood Blond, Gatty 1989
This is an example of a more extreme modern form of bloom. Bearded iris should be less frivolous and more regal, in my opinion.

Iris germanica
Iris germanica
This iris has been in grown in gardens for centuries. Most cultivars of Iris germanica are sterile, or nearly so. These appear to be ancient hybrids. However, there are some varieties, like the one pictured, that are entirely fertile.

Iris germanica 'Florintina'
Iris germanica 'Florintina'
This plant is supposed to be the original source of orris root used in the perfume industry. However, some beleive that Iris albicans was the original "Iris florintina" used historically for orris root..
The weak floppy petals, which lack "substance", are typical of older variety of bearded iris. Never-the-less, the basic form of the flower is quite elegant.

Iris kashmiriana?
Iris kashmiriana or imposter
I've been told that the plants, such as this one, that are currently being distributed as Iris kashmiriana are not. It is true that it doesn't seem fit the description of the species very well. None-the-less, it is still an attractive flower.

There are no clear red iris, but iris breeders have approached red from a nunber of directions. Dispite having been around more than 20 years, Lady Friend is still a popular "red" iris.

Orange is a modern iris color. You don't find it in wild bearded iris. Notice the tangerine beards on both this iris and Lady Friend above!

If you compare this to a clear yellow iris it does have just a tinge of green in it. This is a late blooming iris and usually finished up the spring bloom season for me.
